Lions 360 coming to you from mid-November

Are you ready to take the walk of the brave?

It’s closer than most people could ever dream of getting to an African Lion, but thanks to Monarto Zoo’s new Lions 360 experience, visitors will be able to get within clawing range of one of Australia’s largest lion prides.

Opening in mid-November 2017, visitors and members will take the walk of the brave through a tunnel and emerge in the heart of the lions’ den, in a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the king of the jungle.

During the 45 minute experience, visitors will have the chance to feed the lions through the heavy duty mesh – giving them the closest possible dining experience without becoming dinner themselves.

Modelled on the popular Great White Shark diving experience which is unique to the Eyre Peninsula, Lions 360 will be a jaw-dropping, absolutely safe encounter, which is unique to the Murraylands in South Australia.

Importantly, Lions 360 will be more than just an experience for our visitors; it will also be valuable enrichment for our feisty pride of lions and has been designed to ensure it is a mutually fascinating experience for both lions and humans. This project is the first of its kind in Australia and has been developed with modern animal welfare science in mind. With ten hectares to roam, the experience is predicated on choice which means the lions exercise control and choice over their environment.

What’s more, the hair-raising new experience will help us continue our work as a conservation charity raising awareness for this amazing species. One of Africa’s most beloved animals, sadly over the last 21 years the lion population in the wild is believed to have been reduced by 43% – that’s the equivalent of three generations. It is now estimated that there may be as few as 20,000 Lions remaining in the wild and this majestic species is now listed as vulnerable to extinction.

Already the home of unforgettable animal experiences, Monarto Zoo’s Lion 360 is just another excuse to visit Australia’s largest open-range zoo.
